5.P.1 Understand force, motion and the relationship between them.
5.P.2 Understand the interactions of matter and energy and the changes that occur.
Students will understand that:
- gravity, friction, and changes in mass affect the motion of objects.
- it is possible to measure the motion of an object based on the distance it traveled in a certain amount of time.
- a graph can be constructed to demonstrate the relationship of time and distance traveled.
- a greater force produces a greater change in motion; this same force would produce a lesser effect on an object with greater mass.
- the weight of an object is equal to the sum of its parts.
- summarizing properties of original materials and the new material(s) formed provide evidence that a change - physical or chemical - may have occurred.
